Helpful Talking Points

  • Capping I-35 was a commitment made to Austin and north central neighborhoods as part of the I-35 Capital Express Central project

  • We support funding ALL roadway improvements necessary to "future-proof" north central caps for community and regional vitality and health

  • We do not support staff's recommendation to reduce cap lengths to 800' on the grounds that it does not meet community goals and has not received public input

  • We support the AIA Design Assistance Team (DAT) convened by the Cherrywood and Hancock Neighborhood Associations to look holistically at the future of Hancock and Delwood Centers, future transit, and I-35

  • We support Council calling to delay non-essential funding commitments for roadway elements until the DAT is concluded and its results be considered in decision-making

  • We support safe and comfortable frontage roads using City design standards--including street trees, traffic calming strategies, reduced speed limits, and safer access to caps and crossings

  • With thoughtful planning, north central I-35 caps are an opportunity to create a destination for ALL of Austin

  • We have not exhausted funding strategies, including private funding for the north central caps
